Mary Alice Kemph Bergman

In the 1900 Federal Census, a Mary A Kemp is listed as living in the household of Jefferson T and Rachel M Bentley as a servant. (They are Wilson Warren Bergman's grandparents). The birthdate is Sept 1883 and her age is 16. She lists her father as coming from Germany and her mother from Ohio.

I have found her birth record as Mary Alice Kampp. Her father Frederick Kemph married
Christina Geiger in Allen Co., Ohio. Frederick was born in Switzerland, and his
language was German. In the 1900 census Mary Alice lists her father as German,
but I don't know who gave the information being that she is a servant in the
household and her father is listed separately as a widower.

In the 1900 Census, a Mary A KEMP is listed as living in the household of Jefferson T and Rachel M Bentley as a servant. The birth year is also listed as 1883 not 1882. She lists her father as coming from Germany and her mother from Ohio.

This census raises a few red flags. Her mother's deathdate is 1892. Where is her father? Did he leave her? Why is she living with the Bentleys? It appears that Mary later marries Rachel and Philip's grandson, Wilson Warren Bergman. Did they meet because she met him by living there, or have the families known each other for years?

Mary Alice's obituary appears in the Rupublican Courier on page 12 on 25 Apr 1938.

MRS. BERGMAN, 54, DIES AT HOSPITAL

Resident of Near Mt. Cory is Taken By Heart Disease After Year's Illness

Mrs. Mary Alice Bergman, 54, of one mile north of Mt. Cory, died at 1:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the Findlay hospital after a year's illness from heart disease.
She was born on September 8, 1883 in Bluffton, to Frederick and Christina Geiger Kemp and moved to Hancock county in 1909. She was married on Nov 7, 1907 to Wilson Bergman, who survives her. Four daughters also survive. They are Mrs. Bliss Reiter, Mt. Cory; Mrs. Mabel Boothby, Lima; and Esther and Ruth, at home. Three grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. from the residence with Rev E. J. Obee officiating. Burial will be in Clymer cemetery. The body will be removed from the Otto funeral home, Rawson, to the residence Tuesday morning.

Her death certificate lists a few interesting facts: She was a housewife for 29 years. Cause of death was Hypertensive Heart Disease.
